Nothing can hurt me today.” - M83’s Steve McQueen</em></p> <p>So in one of the countless situations of my life in which I make a hasty/last minute decision that ends up being a brilliant move, I attended the first of a two night run of shows at the Granada Theater by electro-synth-rock outfit, M83.</p> <p>That run-on sentence describes a decision that was much easier written than implemented. For one, both shows sold out faster than any ticket in the history of the venue, which we’ll just say is a fucking BOLD feat. Second, and more importantly, I DID NOT have one of said tickets as of last Friday afternoon. Luckily, <strike>I am</strike> my friends are awesome.</p> <p>Within a five minute turn around, all of the following occurred:</p> <p>One friend had recommended giving an attempt at scoring a ticket a go (even though they were selling on asshole broker sites for upwards of $100 when the face value was $30). Being unemployed currently, this idea did not seem prudent, especially with the addition of a glance at my bank account. Luckily, my friend knows me well enough to know that, should I be able to find a ticket, none of that shit matters in the least god damn bit. </p> <p>THEN, another friend (who tends to be the guy that knows the guy who has an extra ticket to just about everything) texted me. He had spoken with friend 1 who had come up with this whole irresponsible and brilliant idea in the first place, and had spent a whole 4.743 seconds finding a ticket for me at face value. BOOM BITCHES!!! I’M GOING TO M83!! Needless to say I was pretty pumped. </p> <p>I made it to Dallas the following afternoon at about 4pm. Doors were at 8, so I joined some folks at a porch party for beers and insanely high-brow conversation. The key factor here was that the owner/host of the party lived less than FIFTY YARDS from the venue. Once again, let me remind you that <strike>I am</strike> my friends are awesome. </p> <p>We shuffled the 5 meter trek across Greenville Avenue and staked a spot on the balcony by about 10 after 10pm, which gave me just enough time to absorb the <strike>chemicals</strike> <strike>alcohol</strike> ambience of the entire room before the lights went down. The rest, is difficult at best to describe, however my being <strike>a badass</strike> not one to give up without an attempt, here goes:</p> <p><em>HOLY FUCKBALLS, BATMAN!!!</em></p> <p>Now I’ve seen some pretty amazing shows both large and small, big name acts and nobodies (yet) alike. But this combination of a band that had NO business playing a venue this small, and the venue errr, being this small, created an immediate sense that I had made an insanely good decision to be standing in that room at that time. The lighting was the best I’d ever seen at a Granada show, and the sound board op seemed to be on his game from the first note played. So good sound, good looks, good everything. My friends and I spent the majority of the set just sharing looks of amazement, with very little adjectives to describe what was happening. But we all knew.</p> <p>They played the majority of their newest album Hurry Up. We’re Dreaming with absolute flawless precision/sound/running man marathon sessions by one of the guitarists et al. (Seriously he did it for like 80% of the show and it was great.) Highlights were <em>Reunion, Midnight City,</em> and the track posted here, <em>Steve McQueen. </em></p> <p>That being said, I was personally hoping I’d get to hear a bit of the older stuff that only most other <strike>badasses</strike> hardcore fans would be familiar with. Luckily, after about an hour set and short break, they returned to encore another 10-15 minutes, capping the night off with a personal favorite, <em>Don’t Save Us From the Flames</em>, a song I’d heard about 6 years prior on a fucking Pontiac commercial of all things, which would ultimately lead to the discovery of the band. It was the perfect way to provide a nod to those that had been on board with this group prior to their current break-out album. That last sentence sounds snobby as hell and I don’t give a SHIT. Go make a tumblr and bitch about it. All my bullet points for the perfect show had been scratched off. Well, there was no pre or post show sex with multiple, hot, dumb SMU chicks, but we can’t have it all, can we?</p> <p>All said, (well, NOT all said because there was some great shit that happened post-show but that’s another blog entry) I had battled the voice of reason, fiscal responsibility, unemployment and better judgement only to be victorious once again. Don’t you hate it when that happens? I mean, what lessons does it teach one about the true nature of adulthood and all the hardships that come with it? Personally, it teaches me to AVOID THE SHIT out of adulthood and keep making volatile decisions until you get burned. I mean hey, this isn’t a fucking advice column. </p> <p>At any rate, I just read M83 is already booked to come back to play one of the larger venues in Dallas later this year.
